Union Jack

So, we are so close to the end of the Alphabet Challenge over at the Craft Barn blog. Although it has been difficult sometimes getting a picture finished on time, I'm still really enjoying it and my book with each alphabet picture in it, will be a great memory of my first year as a 'blogger'!

I remember that it was at this time of the year, last year, that I started thinking about what projects I might attempt for 2016 and I find myself thinking that again. What worked, what didn't - usually time is a factor on how many projects we can take on and I certainly don't want to start feeling that any of my crafting is a chore!

I have managed to keep up with my diary/journal (just about) but I'm not sure that I will do it again. I'd like to experiment a bit more with new crafting techniques and if I give up with my diary I will probably have more time to do that.

Anyway, here is my U for Union Jack picture - mainly paper-piecing from gelli prints, the red was bubble wrap and the blue had my favourite Ellen Vargo stamp set stamped and embossed with white, it looks a mash-up because I have cut it up, plus a little texture paste on the white stripes.

  1. This is amazing, Rachel. I considered this for my U word, but since I wasn't exactly sure what the flag looked like, I decided to shy away from it. I was impressed that you used gelli prints. I'm not fond of gelli printing, but it appears you have taken to it nicely (and have achieved some excellent results, too).

You mentioned sewing and needles. I use a universal needle, which is 80/11. They only break when I do something stupid, just like they would if I was sewing something using fabric. I sew every day, maybe only a single page for my scrappy journals (turns into 4 pages when complete and folded), but I never change my needle, even though the "experts" tell you to. I only do it when a needle breaks, so I say, find a universal needle, sew a few bits of paper to paper, and you will love it, too!

  2. Thank you so much for that info - I have seen so much lovely art with stitching incorporated, it really adds that extra detail. Will look out for a universal needle now then and try and remember how to thread up my sewing machine - its been a while!

  3. Great word to choose and a great use of your gelli prints. I like doing yearly challenges as I know by the end of the year I will have a lovely album of art. Weekly challenges are so easy to miss and then never start again! Elaine xx

    1. Yes, I think I agree with you, although this is my first 'album of art'. I would never be able to keep up with a weekly challenge - the process of making each picture can take a long time for me!

    1. Thank you - I am SOO happy with my Gelli plate - I have a notebook with thin graph paper in it and I tend to make most of my prints in that, I figure then that they are all contained in one place!

  5. A lovely word and a fab idea to use your gelli prints for the components of the flag.
